First and foremost: FUCK DONALD TRUMP

I’ve been waiting for this one. The one that has nothing to do with God. The theory that doesn’t give me war flashbacks to Sunday mass when my mom would pinch me every time I got too rowdy for Jesus.

Immanuel Kant was one of those lawful good people. Ya know, on that lil alignment chart. –>

Kant was a moral absolutist. One correct solution to any moral problem. Moral law is binding. He followed a moral code with no exceptions.

Lying is bad always, stealing is bad always, and we shouldn’t be manipulated or manipulate other beings.

We get it Kant, you’re a solid moral dude or whatever. No exceptions for anyone.

Then there’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg. A true public servant. A politician who understood her role as a Justice. No exceptions means no exceptions.

I have my own reservations about the American justice system, as I’m sure most of us do, but there is no denying that woman’s power. She transcended gender stereotypes her entire life.

Throughout the documentary, friends and colleagues described her as shy and quiet. Nothing about the work she did was quiet. Ginsburg was an advocate for gender equality and women’s rights throughout most of her legal career.

Ginsburg didn’t only challenge antiquated views on gendered roles, she actively sought to legally represent and apply the laws written. She understood how gendered stereotypes affect everybody.

Talk about Kantian categorical imperative formulations. Her rulings on gender equality speaks to Kantian universality.

The constitution in this case is the moral absolute. No exceptions, it’s the highest law of the land. And Ginsburg stood by that.

The 14th amendment is clear when stating that no state shall deny to any person the equal protection of the law.

To deny women of equal opportunity goes against the universality of the constitution. You cannot exclude women because they are women. No exceptions remember?

The general rule that stands behind this statement is that you have to treat both genders equally.

Ginsburg constantly reminded old white men that they were not above the law, they could not make exceptions. Especially not for themselves.

With the absolute shitshow that the United States currently is, Donald Trump seeks to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg with conservative Amy Coney Barrett.

She is the opposite of Kant. And not in the utilitarian kind of way. In the super religious will get in the way of “no exceptions” kind of way.

And here I was thinking we’d be done talking about God.

In a 2006 commencement speech at Notre Dame Law School Barrett told the graduating class of LAWYERS,

“But if you can keep in mind that your fundamental purpose in life is not to be a lawyer, but to know, love, and serve God, you truly will be a different kind of lawyer.”

She literally said fuck separation of church and state.

I am super biased against anyone Trump associates with, but it seems to me that Barrett will not follow the commands of the constitution regardless of personal desires. Scary times.

The constitution is the highest law of the land, Kant have any exceptions. None.

I appreciate everything about this post, Lupita, starting with the first line and link.
I have not seen a chart like the one you added on alignments. I love it. I’ve been calling myself a preference hedonist but now I can also call myself a chaotic goodster. Thanks! What are you?
Kant, of course, lands right where you put him. And RBG seems to fit that category, as well, for the most part.
The new Supreme Court nominee causes me some pain of the heart and mind. A lifetime appointment is a long time and our president has already had a chance to get his peeps in there. It’s one of the more important aspects of being president and another reason for folks who care to step up and vote for someone who represents progress and not a retreat to divine command and/or natural law.
I’m heartened by your activist spirit. Fight the power!

Chaotic good all the way!!! I find myself thinking about right and wrong very often, and I believe I’ve come to understand that the human experience is anything but black and white. I don’t fully agree with Kant here, but I see merit in universality. I think in the face of chaos, good is dependant on the person and the situation.

March to the beat of your drum, but seek little to no harm.

    Hi Lupita,

I need to start reading your blogs more often as I found your opinion’s very interesting this week. I love the picture of RBG, even though she was so petit she was a strong force in the American Justice System. I love how you brought up how her colleagues called her shy and quiet but the work she did was far from it. I hope every history class learns about RBG because she changed this country for the better to give people rights that might not of gotten them or taken longer if it wasn’t for her. It’s crazy to think this was still going on in our parents generation and women’s right’s have not been what they are today for that long.

Hi Megan, I appreciate your kind words! I think about history and it’s easy to fall into a bubble of comfort. I used to think we were waaaaaayyyy past the bad stuff because it’s taught as history. It’s in the past right? But I think it’s important to remain critical of power always. I remind myself every day that there’s so much I don’t know and I seek to better understand the people around me. Progress is slow and I don’t think we will ever be done with it. There is always the possibility to do and be better.

    Hey Lupita,
I love your writing style with these posts! You do a great job of capturing attention with humor without sacrificing the content and I think this is totally the future of news with everyone attention spans growing smaller by the day. You did a great job of tying the assignment in with the current landscape. Politics are very much a downer to cover most of the time but that’s exactly why it’s so important. RGB’s documentary was absolutely inspiring and it’s a great change of pace to spend some time focusing on something positive. It’s both comforting and invigorating to know there have been and will continue to be people like RBG!

Hi Dakota! I really appreciate your kind words.

Absolutely! Politics get messier and messier every day. RBG is an absolute legend when calling people out on their misogyny and homophobia (amongst other things). She will forever be the bar for holding people accountable to the laws of the land. No exceptions.

    Lupita!
I appreciate your blog posts so much and the energy you bring to them! I remember counting down the minutes during mass, especially when I had to attend every Sunday for catechism. I would plead with my mom every Sunday morning so that I wouldn’t have to go, to no avail. I’ve done the alignment test several times since I first took it in high school and I’ve gotten chaotic good every single time! I have morals but I’m also human, Kant. I ultimately believe in people. While I do not trust any politician or judge, I do acknowledge the work that RBG put in that allows some of us our right to basic human autonomy. Stay cool.
